SURFACE PREPARATION: All
surfaces to be coated must be thoroughly cleaned and free of dirt, waxes and
oily residues. Surface should
be sanded with 220-320 grit sandpaper to prepare the surface for coating.
Mixing and Reduction Stir only do not shake!
NEW WOOD: When finishing new
wood reduce 50% (2 parts #670 Marine Spar Varnish to 1 part #602 Easy Flow
thinner by volume) for first coat only. This will allow the varnish to
penetrate and seal the grain. For Brush Application: thinning or reduction is
not normally required (after the first coat). If desired, reduce up to 20% with
#605 Easy Flow Thinner. Do Not Thin the finish coat, use it as it
comes in the can.
Finishes in Good Condition: Should be sanded with 220-320 grit sandpaper to remove the
gloss and prepare the surface for recoating.
varnish directly from the can with a clean brush. At temperatures above 75 F, 2 to 3 coats can be applied per day. If
sanding is required, allow to cure 24 hours before sanding. Best results are
achieved when surface is sanded smooth with 320 -400 grit paper after every 2
to 3 coats. Sand
lightly and then use a tack rag to carefully dust off before applying second
coat. Multiple coats may be used to achieve the desired effect. Do not varnish
in damp, cold or frosty weather as this will affect the gloss. It is preferable
to varnish after the morning dew has dissipated and finish well before dusk.
If possible avoid applying or curing the varnish in direct sunlight. Do
not apply varnish to surfaces warmer than 105 F or colder than 45 F.
