Surface Preparation
All new and old timbers should be thoroughly sanded using a minimum P120 grit sanding paper. All old, aged or bleached timber fibres must be thoroughly
removed. Thoroughly degrease timber using T0202. Ensure ALL sanding dust is vacuumed out of grain.
Do not use the Awlwood Brush cleaner (OT0200), alcohol based degreasers (T0008) or chemical products for coating removal or rejuvenation of weathered timber during the Awlwood application process.
Awlwood Multi-Climate Gloss may be applied to Awlwood Primer without sanding on the same day of application once primer is touch dry. If 12 hours have elapsed since primer application, carefully sand with P400 paper or Scotch Pad#7447. Ensure all primer sanding residue is thoroughly vacuumed. If the primer is applied to oily timber, degrease the primer surface using OT0202.
The initial two coats of Awlwood MultiClimate Gloss should be thoroughly sanded using P220 – P240. For multistage build coats, lightly sand at the start of each day using P220-P240 paper or Scotch Pad#7447 to provide a key. Prior to applying the final coat over both Awlwood Multi-Climate Gloss or Awlwood Gloss (as a final finishing system), the previous coat should have cured for 24 hours minimum, and be thoroughly sanded to a dull/matt finish using P400 grit sanding paper or Scotch Pad#7447
The surface preparation advice provided, and equipment suggestions can be used as a guide. Preparation techniques and results will vary according to individual conditions, equipment choice/condition, and other factors. Testing on a non-critical area should be carried out prior to full-scale preparation.
Mixing and Reduction
Mixing and reduction requirements will vary according to individual conditions, climate, equipment choice/condition, and other factors. Mixing and application of a small sample before a full-scale application is recommended.
Brush, Roller: T0201, recommended thinning 10%.
Conventional Spray: T0202, recommended thinning 10%.
Thinning is not recommended when brushing, but up to 10% may be added to aid application in adverse conditions.
Application
Application equipment and parameters are given as a guide. Actual equipment choices will vary according to application conditions, equipment condition and other factors. Testing on a non-critical area should be carried out prior to full-scale application. Contact your local technical service representative for further advice if necessary.
It is important that you read all relevant available literature about Awlwood that is available on the web site awlgrip.com to ensure you fully understand all details pertaining to the use and application of all the components of the system.
Awlwood Multi-Climate Gloss cures by reacting with moisture in the air (humidity). Do not use this product in an air-conditioned environment. If the product is to be used in an environment where it is suspected that low humidity may inhibit the cure of the product, do a test patch before proceeding.
Spraying - If using the 1.2 tip thinning up to 10% using OT0202 Spray Reducer may be required. If using the 1.4 tip thinning is not recommended. Heavier coats (unthinned) are recommended when spraying as product will flow out and “pull” flat upon curing.
Recoatability & Drying Times
The data given for recoatability is not exhaustive. Actual recoatability can vary according to individual conditions, climate and surroundings. If unsure, consult
your local technical service representative before proceeding.
Pot Life - Awlwood Multi-Climate Gloss reacts with the humidity in the atmosphere. It is important to decant from the tin only what may be applied in 20 minutes. Do not pour unused product back into the tin. Always carefully wipe the neck of the tin and immediately screw the cap firmly shut after every use.
Awlwood Multi-Climate Gloss Coats: 1 and 2: Brush/Roller
For best adhesion and appearance, Awlwood Multi-Climate Gloss coats 1 and 2 should be applied at 24 hour intervals by brush or roller, sanding between coats. Do Not apply multiple coats on day 1 and 2. For very deep grain, a third coat after 24 hours may be desirable.
Awlwood Multi-Climate Gloss Coats (3 and above): Brush, Roll or Spray
Multiple coats can be applied each day from coat 3 onwards (up to 3 coats per day). Ensure each coat is touch dry before applying the next coat. To achieve
good flow and levelling, the final coat should be applied as a single coat on the final day of application.
